We’re Different, We’re The Same is a book written by Bobbie Jane Kates. In this book Kates Demonstrates that although we have different body characteristics, Our features function the same. The book is illustrated by Joe Mathieu. Mathieu does an extremely meticulous and rigorous job illustrating different characteristics in the book. This book is published by Random House New York publishing for Sesame Street and it is written for children ages four to eight years old. I found this book astonishing that it covered anti-bias content when it was published in October 1992.

This book emphasizes how we all have the same wants, aspirations , and emotions. In this book Elmo and his friends introduce toddlers and the readers of the book about how we are all similar on the inside and different on the outside. However, those differences make us wonderful. The book starts by comparing different noses and asserting noses can look different, but they function the same way. The book compares the smallest differences and biggest differences such as skin and explains their function. The book asserts our skin is different from each other. However it functions the same by saying that its function.

This book is age-appropriate and has an appealing storyline and illustrations through the storytelling and illustrations. On every page there is a conclusion on how our differences are the same. One important aspect I noticed in the illustrations is that kids can create their own story from the illustrations in the book. They can use the pictures and create their own story line. There are many stories occurring within the illustrations. Kids can use their imagination to create their own storyline. I conclude that this book is even good for those who still can not read it.

The relationships between people presented are inclusive. It can be observed from the illustration that children from different cultures and backgrounds are playing together and having an enjoyable time. Not only is the book inclusive to all races, it is also inclusive to all ages. It shows a grandma, middle aged individuals, and toddlers. The book does not do a good job explaining the relationship between each person. However it does do a rigorous job in illustrating relationships. This allows the reader to apply questions as they are reading the book to the students. The book contains no evidence of Implicit racial bias. Iruka defines “people’s automatic, unconscious, negative responses toward people from racially marginalized social groups”. The book makes sure it does not contain any Implicit racial bias by including the majority of cultures and backgrounds in the book.

The book examines how different portions of us are similar and how they differ. It concludes with the concept that our diversity is what makes the planet a lovely place. This book might be used in the classroom to broaden toddler's viewpoints on equity and diversity. The concept may be simple, but it is an excellent method to teach even our smallest children to be welcoming. We're Different, We're the Same is the great book to present if you want to encourage  children the significance of embracing differences and understanding that we all have commonalities.
